about

The muse tells the story of a woman who falls deeply in love with the artist that paints her, while he disregards her feelings and only views her as an inanimate object. “I like the way he looks at me, but then his eyes glaze over heavily, to view me as nothing but hues”

The song touches on misogyny and objectification, taking inspiration from artists like Picasso who famously said that women are either “Goddesses or doormats”. I wrote the song from the perspective of one of his muses to create the feeling of being emotionally unperceived.. she is being looked at, but she is not seen.

lyrics

He’s into cubism now
My collar bones won’t cut it
Need a strong set of brows
And I’ll smile at the paint he let dry on my plate.
It’s getting late, I said rush it, he won’t rush it

Oh, it’s so romantic and slightly problematic
Is realism worth more than my perfume?
I like the way he looks at me
But then his eyes glaze over heavily to view me as nothing but hues

Because I’m the muse
The one they don’t choose
One lick of some paint is enough to debate it’s the truth

Picasso’s the same
I’ll rearrange my hand
Pick a new name from your digital dating app
No point persuading
It’s amazing, let it be

Oh, it’s so romantic and slightly problematic
Is realism worth more than my virtue
I like the way he looks at me
But then his eyes glaze over heavily to view me as nothing but hues

Because I’m the muse
The one they don’t choose
One lick of some paint is enough to debate it’s the truth

He has a new vision now
One where the subject lays bare in her gown
And I pray that her smudgy face reflects the way he feels about her

Because I’m the muse
The one they don’t choose
One lick of some paint is enough to debate it’s the truth
One lick of some paint is enough to debate it’s the truth
